To witness infant genital cutting: to witness sexual assault

Facebook friendly version:

"It is virtually impossible to witness infant genital cutting and not recognize this act as a form of sexual assault." -Danelle Day

The two most common forms of unnecessary infant genital cutting currently in practice in the United States include male circumcision by Gomco Clamp and male circumcision by Plastibell. If you've not previously witnessed how these surgeries take place, often without anesthesia, we invite you to research further, beginning with linked resources and videos below.

"I still PROFOUNDLY resent that my human right to a whole body, to choose how I express my religion, and to choose how I experience sex for the rest of my life, was ripped away with the flesh of my genitals, when I was helpless to do anything in protest but scream! Stop Routine Infant Circumcision!" -Garrett Wolfe

"The only voice I had during my circumcision was my screams of pain." -Travis Wisdom

"What happened to me, and millions and millions of other men, and is still happening to baby boys at this very moment, is male genital mutilation. When you call it by the name of a surgical procedure you are disregarding what they are actually doing to a man's body. My human rights were violated because of my culture's faith in medicine, and the misguided understanding that a doctor wouldn't recommend a surgery that wasn't necessary. Male genital mutilation is what people need to hear. Wake up! Stop pandering to a misguided cultural understanding and a lie, and start calling it what it is and always has been -- male genital mutilation." -Michael Dulin, Intact D.C.

Join Dulin and others annually in D.C. at Genital Integrity Awareness Week

"I am full of regret. I am a father, and I allowed my son to go through the same trauma I experienced. I had a natural and loving hesitation; I asked the doctor, 'Does it have to be done?' His answer should have been 'NO!' but it was an explanation of how it was 'simple, painless, and healthy.' I consented and saw the raw, bleeding, open wound. Our son had adhesions for many years that would tear, bleed, and get infected. He almost constantly had pain, discomfort, and infections..." -Ryan B.

Genitals should not have unnecessary scars.

"Last night I flipped through the Dec '12 issue of Playgirl, wondering where all the intact men were, and came across an article with the title '25 Must-Try Sex Moves.' The very first point reads: 'Honor The Foreskin: If your man is lucky enough to still have one, he's got a pleasure center at the tip of his penis that circumcised guys can only imagine. Take full advantage of it. He'll be glad you did.' I thought it was really awesome to see the truth being shared! Every little bit helps!" -M.

"When I see a circumcision video, I see myself being strapped down to a cold board. When I hear a baby shrieking in pain, I imagine that I must have shrieked the same way while someone's hands ran a blade across my genitals. And each time, I am reminded that this was an intentional wound. A wound that was discussed, planned, bought and sold. And yet I am forced to face the reality that there will never be justice for victims such as I." -Jonathon Conte, during the one and only time he 'suited up' in bloodstain to bring an idea to the U.S. that was carried out in artistic performance in Berlin.  Photo by Cynthia, Intact Louisiana.

Imagine this exam was answered in such a way by a woman who was a survivor of genital cutting... it is unlikely she would be deemed 'paranoid' and 'delusional' for seeing circumcision as trauma inflicted upon her body. Why are men denied the same processing of what was done to them? Make no doubt, it is another form of sexism - one we often do not recognize as a society when we deny men the ability to express and work through what was done to them, and their varied responses to such assault.

"Another year has passed and still my foreskin hasn't tried to kill me." -Jeremy K.

One gentleman wrote today to ask that his reflections and experiences be shared anonymously. The belittling of men's experiences of sexual assault and the aftermath of such things is never okay on any level. Just as we would afford a woman who lived through circumcision and its impact on her body/life a voice to express herself in whatever fashion suited her, so also are men deserving of the same. "The Lost List" http://www.norm.org/lost.html

Author and journalist, Bill Coles, writes, "Of all the ludicrous pieces of claptrap that I have heard spouted about Prince George, there is nothing quite so bonkers - so utterly fantastical - as this idea that the boy is going to be circumcised. Where has this nutso idea come from? I know exactly where: the United States.

Over in the US, it is quite common for wee boys to be circumcised, whatever their religion. Well good for them. But because circumcision is rife in the US, some doltish royal commentators have got it into their heads that it's happening all over the world. I can just imagine the newsroom conversation: "Hey! American boys get circumcised - so when's this Prince Georgie going to be done? Who's gonna do it? What will happen to the royal foreskin? Find out - now! The public has a right to know!"

Ahemmm! Do I need to spell it out? Circumcision is a rarity in the UK - and is generally only done for religious or medical reasons. To think that Prince William and Kate are even considering having their boy circumcised is just crackers. [...] You might as well speculate that Wills is going to have George's name tattooed onto his bicep..." http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/bill-coles/prince-george-being-circumcised_b_3724834.html

"I still remember my circumcision agony. I was 5 years old, four adults held me down while another sliced my foreskin, I was still awake and the pain was unbearable. I still cry when I think about it sometimes. What angered me even more was learning that circumcision was not going to give me any real benefits, and that the procedure could have killed me. I will never forgive my parents for putting me through that. I'm very happy to see that there are people who are speaking out against this atrocity. No child should have to suffer what I suffered. That was in Pakistan, I live in New Zealand now where male circumcision is less than 7% and nearly all doctors here refuse to do it. I will certainly not be circumcising any of my children. Long live intactness." -Mohammed

More men are speaking up each and every day to abolish the outlandish myths that surround the intact male body in North American culture. It is no surprise that the vast majority of those who have retained their full genitals for a lifetime have *never* experienced the 'problems' that fairytales of a cutting culture invent. Functions of the Foreskin: http://www.DrMomma.org/2009/09/functions-of-foreskin-purposes-of.html

One truth about today's men who were circumcised as infants is this: they did not consent to having a part of their genitals permanently removed from their body. Here, Eddy reminds us of this fact in photographic representation. Please allow your son to grow into a man who maintains full agency over his body and his genitals.

"I only date circumcised women. It just looks better." Supporting male genital mutilation is sexist. T-shirt from Made By Momma's intact advocacy collection.

Genital mutilation isn't only forced on females.

Danish Nurses Council Declares Circumcision Unethical

The Danish Nursing Council issued a statement on behalf of their youngest patients - infant boys, writing:

The circumcision of boys without medical indication is ethically unacceptable when the procedure is performed without the informed consent of the young person, and such consent can only be given once the child is of official age.

Deputy Chairman of the Danish Nursing Council, Anni Pilgaard, added that:

Cutting is often done in connection with cultural and religious affiliation, and it is an intervention that permanently changes a child's body, so that the intervention eliminates a child's ability to make decisions about his own body. Therefore, circumcision of boys should not be done before a young person is of legal age, and can decide whether he wishes [to remain intact] or be circumcised.

The Danish Nursing Council also included the following remarks in their statement:

The [circumcision] operation is in violation of the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that children must be protected from traditionally bound rituals that may be harmful to their health.

A growing number of nations have called for an introductory age minimum for circumcision surgery of 18 years of age -- when a young person can make decisions over his own genitals. This is a legal move that is supported by the vast majority (87%) of Denmark's citizens.

Press release:

Intact Care and Circumcision Info Pack

In order to make a fully informed decision, having easy access to valid, research-based information is key. Working hand in hand with clinicians who volunteer with Saving Our Sons, we deliver accurate prepuce ('foreskin'), intact care, and circumcision information to any expecting parent or clients of intact conscious practitioners. There are 10 options below for getting material to your expecting friends and family members.

The Full Info Pack

The full SOS info pack includes:
  • 80 pages of articles and research. This material broaches a wide range of sub-categories within intact literature, and responds to all major myths regarding the prepuce, intact care, and circumcision today.
  • Complimentary videos on DVD full of helpful, research-based information on the prepuce, its care, and the circumcision decision parents in the U.S. and Canada are allowed to make today.
  • A proper intact care card and sticker for use at a physician's office, daycare, nursery or with a babysitter. We are happy to send along additional intact care cards or stickers at your request. These are 2-sided, full color, glossy, and made with heavy card stock so they can be reused (or laminated and kept handy with your baby's diaper bag).
  • A National Medical Organizations Statements on Circumcision chart that highlights positions on infant circumcision from a variety of respected groups around the world including those in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Finland, India and others.
  • An Intact Celebrities oversized postcard that serves to highlight many of the well known men in U.S. culture who are happily intact for a lifetime (abolishing some of the myths about intact men being socially undesirable).
  • A Keeping Future Sons Intact card especially for parents who may already have a son who was circumcised. This does not mean future sons cannot remain intact. Many families are raising both circumcised and intact sons, and we hope to support parents in this change of heart.
  • A "Did You Know?" card full of quick facts about the prepuce, intact care, and circumcision in the U.S. and Canada.
  • An "Expecting a Boy?" postcard that contains quick go-to resources on the front; circumcision and intact care points on the back.
  • A "Trust His Body" postcard that serves as an encouragement to parents of the perfection with which their son arrives. The back has the functions of the foreskin and intact care information.
  • An "Intact vs. Circumcised Outcome Statistics" postcard that highlights the difference between an intact and circumcised newborn baby; shows a photo of what a circumcised infant looks like both from Plastibell and Gomco clamp, and lists statistics and risk factors both for keeping babies intact, and circumcising.
  • An "Intact vs. Circumcised Adult" postcard that specifies the way the glans must change from being an internal to external organ when circumcision is carried out. This card is also includes restoration information for men who may want to look further into this option.
  • A "Lost/Found" card that has quick-facts on the functions of the foreskin on one side (things that are lost to circumcision) and the things found with restoration on the back. This card is especially for fathers who may feel their son should 'match' them.
  • A "Restoration" card that has go-to resources for men who may have been circumcised at birth, as well as the large variety of restoration devices available to men today.
  • A "Breastfeeding/Circumcision" info card that points out the many ways that circumcision can hamper a successful breastfeeding relationship.
  • A "Congratulations!" card with a wide variety of discussion groups on various topics parents may be interested in (everything from pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, babywearing, cloth diapering, gentle discipline, raising girls or boys, etc.).
  • An "Elephant in the Hospital" sticker. Dr. McAllister's entire Georgetown University lecture is included on the DVD with this pack; the sticker is added as an extra encouragement to spark interest and move parents to check things out.
  • [Optional] Added faith-based information that is relevant to families who are Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Mormon, or Catholic. Please include a note when ordering or email SavingSons@gmail.com for faith-based items to be added.
  • [Optional] An "HIV/AIDS and Circumcision" card stressing facts that relate to the 2006 HIV trials in Africa, and the myths that have surfaced from those trials in U.S. media.
  • [Optional] "Did You Know" and Intact Care cards in Spanish
  • Calmoseptine samples: This ointment is the top recommended for use on developing skin. It does not interfere with a baby's natural pH or healthy (protective) microflora, and is perfect for use on babies during diaper days, when irritation or redness is common. It is the most recommended cream by pediatricians volunteering their time with Saving Our Sons, and is the cream we use when leading intact care classes. Calmoseptine can be purchased at most pharmacies around the world, or on Amazon
  • Contact information for Saving Our Sons and The INTACT Network volunteers, and follow-up with families who may have additional questions, or wish to talk with an intact friendly physician, educator, or other parents in their local area.
Each of the items in the SOS info pack has been specially selected by a board of individuals who have served in the professional fields of pediatrics, human sexuality, development, birth and education over the past 35 years. Our pack serves to empower parents in making a fully informed decision for their son before birth, and equipping parents with necessary resources for proper intact care after birth. The SOS info pack is perfect to share with friends, family and parents (or parents-to-be), as well as for birth and baby educators, midwives, doulas, and medical professionals to lend to expecting clients.

No profit is made on the info pack. $12.50 goes toward printing, materials publication, and supplies; $6.85 toward Priority shipping (U.S.), $9 (Canada), $12 to other international locations by weight. If you donate more than $19 toward the full info pack, the remainder will go to help other families.

Church Blessing Pack
The Church Blessing Pack was created to have items for expecting, new, and nursing mothers in Christian churches. These items are designed to steer people back to intact information, in a way that is welcomed by most churches. The nursing items can be left in your church nursing room, the calmoseptine samples and 'Congratulations' cards can be left by changing tables. Some churches have business card sharing areas for congregation members, that the 'Congratulations' cards are perfect for. The Whole Christian cards and stickers may or may not fit with your church, depending on size and how welcoming it is of information. Some members may be able to plant things anonymously, while others would be known, or need to get permission to share. If these do not work with your church, 'carding' with them at a local Christian bookstore, the Christian books section at Barnes & Noble, or at Target is another great idea.

Church Blessing Pack ($6) includes:
• 10 Lanolin samples
• 10 coupons for $1 off Lansinoh
• 5 Latch on cards
• 15 Congratulations cards
• 5 Whole Christian cards
• 10 Whole Christian stickers
• 8 Calmoseptine packets (good for 2-3 diaper changes each) with stickers
• 2 extra postcards (to give to an expecting friend, or post around town)
Purchase ($6 per pack)

Church Blessing Mini ($4) includes:
• 5 Lanolin samples
• 5 coupons for $1 off Lansinoh

Hospital Stay Pack
The Hospital Stay Packet includes an assortment of intact care materials - stickers, postcards, and info cards - to put in your baby's chart, have on his bassinet, his wipes container, diaper tabs, or include in your paperwork. Items may also be laminated (paper hole punch the top) to hang as a placard. This packet also includes a few items for awareness raising or seed-planting in the hospital (should you encounter anyone who questions your decision to keep your baby intact; or to drop in the restroom or waiting room for another future parent before you leave). The Hospital Stay Packet does not come with a "Do Not Circumcise / Do Not Retract" baby band, unless you choose this option. These soft/stretchy baby bands can be ordered separately as well, and each one arrives with a small number of cards and stickers as well. https://www.etsy.com/listing/502616895/do-not-retract-do-not-circumcise-baby

Email or Facebook Message
Information is almost always best received by professional materials in-hands. This sparks further curiosity in a way that leads people to investigate more deeply. The next best thing if you cannot get materials into someone's hands is to email or message them yourself with 1-2 quality links that lead to more information. The resource page at SOS is an effective starting point that has saved many babies: SavingSons.org/2014/12/should-i-circumcise-pros-and-cons-of.html It is also the landing page if you only share the SOS website (SavingSons.org). If you're unable or do not wish to email or message on Facebook yourself, email SavingSons@gmail.com and we will respectfully message your friend, anonymous of who requested.

We send one copy of the Expecting a Boy? postcard via email (pictured above), an intact care/functions of the foreskin postcard, as well as 1-2 quality links that will lead the reader to further information, and are specific to that individual's family/faith/location. Saving Our Sons messages are professional, courteous, and we will get information to your friend/family member and answer any corresponding questions. We will not pester, harass or otherwise bombard your friend.

Please include the following information when requesting that items be emailed/messaged:
  • Name
  • Email or Facebook URL
  • Faith-based information (is this person Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Catholic, Mormon, etc.?)
  • Past child information (does this person already have a son who was circumcised?)
  • State or country that this individual lives in (so that we can connect them with a local leader/group for further dialog and connection if they wish)

For Mom
Send a little love to the baby-saving mom in your life. For a donation of any amount (to cover shipping) we will send your recipient momma a high quality 5x7 magnet that reads, "Thank you, Mom, for saving babies." It is a special little reminder, fitting for the front of her refrigerator door, that her #i2 work does not go unnoticed. Choose between the "Baby Feet" or "Baby Legs" magnet (or both); and include the "Zen" or "Orchids" postcard if you'd like to give a donation in her honor. Each postcard has quick intact facts and stats on back, with a long list of websites for connecting. We will add in a small variety of advocacy materials with your magnet (stickers, pens, cards, bracelets, etc.) for donations over $10. Please include a note with your recipient's name, address, and choice of magnet and postcard, or email this information to SavingSons@gmail.com
